1. Have both you and a friend stand near the prop closet with your friend having an instrument equipped
2. Equip the instrument you want to try out at the closet (do not close the window)
3. Have your friend take out their instrument and select a music sheet
4. The option to join in on their music sheet should appear above their head
5. Click to join and play away!

It will look kind of funny cuz you'll be "playing" the prop you currently have equipped, but at least you'll be able to listen to the instrument before you buy it without having to look it up. You can also wait for the music sheet to be finished and then you'll be in free-style mode though your music key will probably still be the same as the music sheet that was played. Sometimes the "join in" option might not show up, but your friend selecting a different music sheet or you restarting your own game should fix this.
